The Canon EOS 50D DSLR is Canon’s answer to its main rival, the Nikon D300. The EOS 50D is both a worthy upgrade for current 40D owners and a real challenger to the D300, mainly thanks to the larger 15 megapixel sensor, new Digic 4 processor and expanded ISO range, which haven’t compromised image quality in any way. The EOS 50D offers the best image quality of any Canon APS-C DSLR camera to date

The Canon EOS 50D is a worthy update to the already excellent EOS 40D, equipping it not just with the latest features, but also a significant boost in resolution without compromising noise levels. There’s no doubt the new EOS 50D is a very powerful and feature-packed semi-pro DSLR which succeeds in its goals.

After having experienced the quality and depth of colour in the new LCD screen it will be very difficult to go back to the 40D and to other comparable models in its class. If you do a lot of on-camera reviewing and value an improved screen, consider the 50D.

The EOS 5OD does very well, and the increased resolution and more advanced functionality makes it Canon’s best mid-range DSLR yet. I expect it to be around £1000 by Christmas, and at that point, the 50D will be extremely competitive.

As well as providing some significant improvements over the EOS 40D, the EOS 50D offers not just a better-built body but a significantly higher level of functionality than its parallel consumer model, the EOS 450D.
