The second-generation iPod Touch has been described as a “phone-less iPhone” and for good reason. It pretty much has everything you could ask for, apart from the phone feature. Although it is by far the best MP3 player out there at the moment, it isn’t too different from the first one.

Reviews
The second-generation Apple iPod Touch has it all: music, videos, photos, podcasts, e-mail, Web browsing, Internet radio, games, Nike+, Wi-Fi music downloads, and an App Store for adding thousands of custom features. The iPod Touch also includes features that are light-years ahead of the competition, its design has improved, and its price has finally come down to earth.

Apple has begun to reinvent the iPod touch as the ‘funnest’ vehicle for playing games, websurfing and email when in Wi-Fi range, and even as a keep-fit companion with its Nike+ jogging monitor. But in spite of its shortfall in making phone calls, we liked the iPod touch for its irrepressible ability to play good music.

There was precious little wrong with the first version and there’s even less to dislike the second time around. The iPod Touch is still streets ahead of the competition, at least from a technology perspective. Not only that but it’s still eminently stylish and the 32GB offering, while expensive, is pretty practical, too.

Stunning, sprawling glass display. Access to App Store and iTunes Store via Wi-Fi. Built-in Internet browser. New Genius feature builds playlists for you. While the second-generation iPod touch is very similar to its predecessor, it has enough extra features, like Genius playlists and excellent games from the Apps Store, to maintain its standing at the top of the PMP heap. However it’s very expensive, is a fingerprint magnet and file support is still extremely Apple-centric.

The iPod Touch isn’t a gadget that’s accustomed to being upstaged. It is, after all, the best portable media player on the planet. The iPod Touch 2g is such a comparatively minor upgrade, seasoned owners of its predecessor might be hard pressed to tell the difference. But changes have been made: it’s slimmer, cheaper and now has built-in Nike+ support.

If Apple had released the iPod Touch at these prices last year, we would have been thrilled. Virtually all of the first-generation model’s functional issues have been addressed—at least, partially—and the new version looks, feels, and sounds considerably better than its predecessor. While it is not a complete substitute for an iPhone thanks to its lack of phone, GPS, and camera features, the new iPod touch is a completely worthy alternative for users who just don’t need that added functionality.
