Asus has delivered a very refined and classy netbook without sacrificing functionality and this should be applauded. And, while it is expensive for a netbook, it delivers enough that it isn’t extortionate. Thus, if you’re after a little more refinement than regular netbooks can deliver, this is your best bet.

The Eee PC 1008HA Seashell is a stunning netbook. It’s very comfortable to use, extremely light and portable, and is a good all-round performer. For us, the Eee PC 1000HE’s superior battery life makes it the better machine, but the Seashell holds its own in what is an increasingly competitive netbook market.

Our current favourite in this market, Samsung’s brilliant NC10, is available for just over £300 (inc. VAT) and the Eee PC 1008HA is currently selling for closer to £370. That prevents us from giving the 1008HA a solid recommendation, but if you don’t mind paying over the odds for its svelte figure then the Eee PC 1008HA is a tempter.

From the first moment you clap eyes on it, it’s quite clear that the Eee PC 1008HA is an altogether classier beast than most of its predecessors. It looks gorgeous, feels great in use and, despite the captive battery, turns in a respectable performance away from the mains. If you don’t mind paying a premium for fine design, then the Seashell is a tantalizing prospect.

Overall, the Eee PC Seashell 1008HA is a compelling proposition. Its only real fault is a lack of ports, but the quality, comfort and excellent mobility make it a great choice for those seeking a mid-range netbook.
