The Apple iPad is the latest Apple device to capture the world’s attention, and it has bought great attention to the tablet PC market.

But unlike other tablet devices, the iPad runs iPhoneOS. Is this a good thing, or is a tablet running Windows 7 a better option. With its own special App Store and the ability to view HD movies the iPad is certainly an entertaining computer, but does it beat a laptop or netbook?

There may be things it doesn’t do, but what it does do, it does remarkably well. And to my great surprise, you can actually get real work done with the iPad. It sets the bar high for competing products in this nascent Internet tablet category. But I can tell you that when my laptop eventually dies, I’ll be getting one.

All in all, however, the iPad is an advance in making more-sophisticated computing possible via a simple touch interface on a slender, light device. Only time will tell if it’s a real challenger to the laptop and netbook.

The Apple iPad is basically a gigantic iPod Touch. It’s not nearly as good for creating stuff. On the other hand, it’s infinitely more convenient for consuming it — books, music, video, photos, Web, e-mail and so on. The bottom line is that the iPad has been designed and built by a bunch of perfectionists. If you like the concept, you’ll love the machine.

The on-screen keyboard was eminently usable, even in portrait mode. But it was even better in landscape mode -I could almost touch type. I’d use a Bluetooth keyboard for extended typing sessions but the on-screen keyboard was better than I expected. Even the iPad’s built-in speaker sounded better than I had expected.
